What happens when sibling rivalries hit middle age? Is there lasting resentment from those who care for aging parents while others lead a glamorous life? What happens when resources run dry? The answers can be found in this delightful comedy of family relations, with a boy toy and even voodoo thrown in just to spice things up.
Some of the show’s elements were inspired by works of Anton Chekhov, but the audience does not need to be familiar with Chekhov to enjoy the play. Full of clever and funny lines, this play also has pathos and heart, cementing the fact that you can’t pick your family so you just need to love and accept them for who they are. Love, laughs, drama….and Voodoo!! A show that everyone will be sure to enjoy.
This play received six Tony Award nominations for the 67th Tony Awards, winning the Tony Award for Best Play.[ The play won the 58th Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the 2013 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.
Moon Theatre Company will be presenting this play for Northern Colorado Audiences at the Historic Rialto Theater in Downtown Loveland. The performance dates are 18th 19th and 20th and 25th 26th and 27th. Evening Performances start at 7:30 and Sunday Matinees begin at 2:00PM. Moon Theatre Company presents
VANYA and SONIA and MASHA and SPIKE!
By Christopher Durang
Directed by Andrew Quirk
Christopher Durang’s Tony award winning play about family dysfunction revolves around Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia, who live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up. Their peace, however, is disturbed when their movie star sister Masha returns unannounced with her new much younger boy toy, Spike, leading to a weekend of rivalry, regret, anger, drama and hilarity.
Auditions will be held Sunday, July 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Berthoud Re/Max TOWN & COUNTRY offices, 340 Mountain Ave, Berthoud, CO 80513. Callbacks will be July 13 if necessary.
No appointment is necessary. There will be cold readings from the script. Monologues are encouraged, but not required.
Characters:
VANYA: 50’s, living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Openly gay and resigned to his life situation when compared to his sisters.
SONIA: Vanya’s adopted sister currently living with him. Also in her 50’s. She is very discontent, upset, regretful, prone to fits and possibly bipolar.
MASHA: Vanya’s biological sister. Also in 50’s. Glamorous and successful actress whose career has started to flounder. Pays for the house that Vanya and Sonia live in. Spends all her time gallivanting around the world. Usually with much younger men. This year’s model is called:
SPIKE: 20’s. Good looking. Has no problem being an underwear model. Very self-absorbed.
NINA: Lovely, sincere, would be actress. 20’s. Sweet, somewhat naïve. Innocent. She is visiting her aunt and uncle who live next door.
CASSANDRA: Cleaning lady, ageless, soothsayer. Kind of crazy.

Synopsis
How far would you go to save a few dollars? Leslie’s roommate Jon goes so far as to tell the IRS that Leslie is a woman and that they’re married! It’s a great plan, unless the IRS man decides to come and check out the situation for himself and Leslie has to become a woman to fool him. Then, if the IRS man decides to invite himself to dinner and help himself to your booze, how long can you keep up the charade? And how long can you hide your scheme from your mother, who drops by unexpectedly, your landlord, who doesn’t allow women to live in the building, and Leslie’s girlfriend, who is just plain confused?
